The back of the matt has the marking: Photographed by S. Sheaffer, Broadway Gallery, Hanover, Pa. We have not been able to determine the location of where this photo was taken. Also, we have not been able to determine whether or not Lincoln was in this coffin when the photo was taken. In all of our research we have only been able to find photos of an elaborate coffin which he was placed in.
Also, we have found photos of a very plain white sarcophagus that the ornate coffin would have been placed in. Whereas, the coffin in our photo seems to be very plain. There is slight browning from age. There is one tiny 1/16 inch diameter surface scuff on the photo just in from the left border. There is one 3/8 inch by 3/16 inch lightly soiled spot on the back left edge of the matt.
The cdv measures 3 15/16 inches by 2 7/16 inches. This very interesting & exceedingly rare photo turned up recently in a collection which came out of a Lancaster County, Pennsylvania estate.
