Antique 1880 Napoleon Sarony Cabinet Card Celebrated Stage Star Sarah Bernhardt
The bottom of the card has Sarony's ink stamp and a stamp of Bernhardt's name and the address of Sarony's studio on Union Square in New York. A lithographer and photographer, Sarony was highly popular as a portrait photographer, best known for his portraits of the stars of late-19th century century American theatre. From 1870 until Sarony's death in 1896 he was deemed the premiere portrait photographer of the United States, and one of the greatest in the world.
Hailed as "the Divine Sarah, " Sarah Bernhardt is recognized as the first international stage star. She built a reputation as a versatile actress with an expressive voice and poetic gestures. She also wrote, painted, and sculpted. Measurements: 4.25" x 6.5".
