MOON craters NASA Lunar Orbiter III superb collection vintage NASA PHOTOGRAPHS
INCLUDING RARE OBLIQUE VIEWS AND HIGH RESOLUTION CLOSE-UPS OF THE MOON'S SURFACE. LUNAR ORBITER PROGRAM a series of five unmanned lunar orbiter missions launched by the United States from 1966 through 1967. Lunar Orbiter III was launched on the 5th February 1967. The primary objective Lunar Orbiter III was to continue the Orbiter I and Orbiter II task of photographing promising areas of the lunar surface to determine their adequacy as Apollo and/or Surveyor landing sites. A superb collection of 11 original vintage NASA photographs of the surface of the Moon taken by Lunar Orbiter III in its quest for viable landing sites, April 1967. A total of 11 original vintage NASA. Gelatin silver prints on fibre-based paper. He lot includes one official NASA "Black Number" print: L-67-2825 with NASA caption printed in black on the reverse. Further four images, 67-H-308, 67-H-310 and 67-H-311, and P-6514AA. Feature violet mimeographed captions on the reverse, while the remaining six photographs have vintage typed or printed captions affixed to the reverse. All from the same private collection. 26 x 20.25 cm (10 ¼ x 8 inches), with margins. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, and view gallery images closely. These 11 vintage and historic NASA photographs are all related to the Lunar Orbiter III mission to the Moon to establish viable landing sites for the unmanned Surveyor and manned Apollo missions. Images show different sections of the Moon's craterous surface, including portions of Cavalerius Hills, craters Copernicus and Theophilus (the prominent impact crater that is among those visible from Earth 5 days after the new moon), crater Hyginus and Hyginus Rille.
The 6 photographs with affixed captions are otherwise plain on the reverse i. However, the captions seem contemporary or very near contemporary to the time of the Lunar Orbiter III mission e. Refer to the mission in the present tense.
